Participate at our Survey and win 1 of 10 Fonera SIMPL

Posted by schwendannina. Comments Off on Participate at our Survey and win 1 of 10 Fonera SIMPL

Dear Foneros, during the last months we have developed a survey based on the findings of the interviews. With the help of this survey we would like to even better understand members’ motivations and concerns regarding their participation in a wireless community like FON. The survey is addressed to Foneros worldwide and is available in English, French, German and Italian. If you are / have been / intend to become a Fonero, please fill in our survey or if you know other Foneros kindly forward this link to them. It will take about 10 minutes to complete the survey.

Your contribution will be of great value for our project and in order to thank you for your participation we will riffle 10 Fonera SIMPL and 50 vouchers for 40% off the Fonera SIMPL (all kindly offered by FON) among the participants who complete the survey and would like to participate in the draw.

SURVEY CLOSED

Interview Phase concluded:

Posted by schwendannina. Comments Off on Interview Phase concluded:

We managed to do all the 40 interviews during summer 2010 thanks to the precious help of FON and many motivated Swiss Foneros who dedicated their time in order to meet us and share their experience and discuss about some topics in very interesting and stimulating interviews. We would like to thank again all participants for their precious contribution.

In the meantime we have transcribed and analyzed most of the interviews and submitted a first draft of the results for publication in an International conference. In the section “Interview” you can find a short summary of our most important results and shortly we will also publish the main findings in a report on this webpage.

Interviewing FON members in Switzerland

Posted by schwendannina. Comments Off on Interviewing FON members in Switzerland

We have started our Interview sessions in Ticino and up to now have collected 5 testimonies. By interviewing those Foneros, various motivations and different experiences have been identified. All interviews have been very pleasant and we want to thank again all participants for their interesting and useful contributions.
We will now extend the interviews to other parts of Switzerland and hope to be able to do about 40 interviews by the end of summer.
If you are or have been a Fonero too and would like to participate at an interview your contribution would be of great value to our research and very much appreciated. In this case you can contact Anna directly by sending an e-mail to anna.picco.schwendener@usi.ch
Thank you!

Presentation of Wi-Com Project at Mobile Business Conference in Athens

Posted by schwendannina. Comments Off on Presentation of Wi-Com Project at Mobile Business Conference in Athens

We presented the Wi-Com project and some first results in Athens at the 9th International Conference on Mobile Business (June 2010).
We provided some 1st insights: namely an adapted theoretical model and some evidence from a content analysis of hybrid wireless community forums (the official boards.fon.com forum and the unofficial German and Swiss forums: fonboard.de and fonero.ch.)
From this analysis participation seems to be favored by tangible rewards (free network access, revenue sharing), social rewards (socializing with peers and feel part of a community), psychological rewards (pursuing idealistic goals and feeling competent) and intrinsic enjoyment, but hindered by participation efforts (monetary costs and required effort) and other concerns (security, legality and bandwidth use).
In the section “Publications” you can access the full published article.

Welcome to the Wi-Com Project Web Page

Posted by schwendannina. Comments Off on Welcome to the Wi-Com Project Web Page

The goal of this project is to understand motivations of wireless community participants: Why do people decide to share their home wi-fi connection with other completely unknown people? There could be a vast range of motivations going from ideological to extrinsic, intrinsic, social or psicological rewards (eg free access to internet).  We now want to understand which motivations are the most important one in order to comprehend the mechanism underlying the formation, expsansion and sustained existence of wireless cummunities.
